Trained to Understand, Here to Support

Dementia affects each person differently and evolves over time, making care both complex and sometimes overwhelming. That’s why informed, empathetic support is essential. Guided by dementia expert Teepa Snow, we focus on truly understanding each person and offering meaningful engagement, appropriate support, and sensory experiences to create more positive moments each day, for every resident.

At Highgate, this philosophy shapes everything we do—and our team is uniquely prepared to deliver it. With Certified Dementia Practitioners and certified PAC trainers across our organization, our care is rooted in expertise, empathy, and proven best practices.

Our Holistic Approach Sets Us Apart, and Works

While many memory care programs focus solely on medical care, Highgate takes a holistic approach that nurtures the whole person. From soothing spa baths and hand massages to mood-balancing herbal teas, every detail is chosen with intention.

Our aromatherapy helps lift spirits, stimulate appetite, and encourage restful sleep. We promote movement, hydration, and nourishing meals—including finger foods when helpful—and work closely with families and physicians to ensure medications are appropriate and supportive.

Most importantly, we foster daily moments of connection through meaningful activities, social interaction, and outings that help residents stay curious, engaged, and connected to life.

MORE ABOUT OUR APPROACH

Building Understanding Through the Virtual Dementia Tour®

At Highgate, we believe empathy is essential to exceptional memory care. That’s why we offer the Virtual Dementia Tour® (VDT®) to both team members and families. Guided by a certified trainer, this immersive, evidence-based experience simulates the physical and sensory changes associated with cognitive decline—allowing participants to better understand what it may feel like to live with dementia.

By temporarily altering perception, the VDT® fosters deeper awareness, sensitivity, and compassion. For our team, it’s more than a training—it’s a powerful tool that helps us respond to residents with patience, respect, and heart. For families, it opens a window into their loved one’s world, helping them connect on a more meaningful level.

Leading the Way in Fall Prevention with SafelyYou

At Highgate, resident safety is a top priority—and we’re proud to take a proactive, innovative approach to fall prevention. Through our partnership with SafelyYou, we combine compassionate care with world-class technology to reduce fall risks and respond more effectively when falls do occur.

SafelyYou uses AI-powered video technology and 24/7 remote clinical support to detect and assess falls in real time, helping us understand how they happen and how to prevent them. Our trained teams use these insights—along with best practices in fall mitigation—to create safer environments and more personalized care plans.

It’s one more way we provide not only a higher level of care, but also greater peace of mind for families who trust us with their loved ones.

Empowering Connection Through a Positive Approach to Care™

At Highgate, we meet residents where they are—with patience, compassion, and a deep understanding of their individual needs. Our Memory Care team is trained in Teepa Snow’s internationally recognized Positive Approach to Care™ and Positive Physical Approach™, which emphasize what remains rather than what’s been lost. This person-centered philosophy helps create more positive, meaningful interactions, even during moments of confusion or distress.

Whether a resident is experiencing nighttime wandering, repetitive questions, incontinence, or asking to “go home,” our care partners are equipped with the skills and empathy to respond gently and effectively. In addition to hands-on training, team members also complete GEM™ training, a program that uses precious gem colors to represent the changing abilities of the brain throughout different stages of dementia. This model helps us better understand each resident’s perspective and tailor care in a way that honors who they are.
